New Jersey State Emergency Registry of Volunteers

Interested in Volunteering?
Whether you're a licensed healthcare professional or a community member looking to make a difference, the New Jersey Department of Health offers two important ways to get involved in emergency response efforts. If eligible, you can choose to participate in one or both programs.

Two Powerful Ways to Serve:

Emergency System for Advance Registration of Volunteer Health Professionals (ESAR VHP)

- empowers states and territories to pre-register and verify health professionals before emergencies strike. This federally mandated program accelerates volunteer deployment across state lines—cutting delays and delivering skilled responders exactly when and where they’re needed most.

  • Pre-Verified Credentials
Credentials like licenses and hospital privileges are thoroughly verified and securely stored, saving critical time during emergencies.
  • Nationwide Interoperability
Standardized national guidelines enable smooth volunteer coordination across states.
  • No Obligation to Serve
Participation is voluntary; volunteers can choose when and where to respond.
  • Faster Emergency Deployment
Pre-credentialed volunteers can be deployed rapidly during disasters.
  • Integrated Local & Federal Response
Supports mobilization efforts at all government levels.
  • Verified by New Jersey Department of Health
Credentials are reviewed and approved to ensure reliability.

Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)

- is a national network of volunteers who support local communities with emergency preparedness, disaster response, and public health initiatives. Volunteers receive training to assist effectively during emergencies and public health events. Participation helps communities build resilience and respond more efficiently to crises.

  • Diverse Volunteer Network
Includes medical professionals and non-medical experts such as logistics and communications specialists.
  • Seamless Local-to-National Coordination
Units are led by local coordinators connected with state authorities and ASPR regional offices.
  • Comprehensive Volunteer Roles
Support includes emergency training, shelter operations, vaccination clinics, testing, behavioral health, outreach, disaster recovery, and logistics.
  • Flexible Service Opportunities
Volunteers serve locally, statewide, or nationally—wherever help is needed.
  • Locally Led Units
Each MRC unit is managed locally to address community-specific needs.
